Because I have a 9-month contract and I my child was born right at the end of the year, I was very, very fortunate to have a 6 months off after my child’s birth (3 summer months + 12 weeks FMLA). However, getting the leave arrangements clarified was the most stressful part of the pregnancy! It took five months, and ultimately a meeting with the university's CFO (a very compassionate and professional man) to get everything straightened out. One of the most alarming moments was when I discovered policies for our university system that apparently weren't known/remembered to at the local HR office. I felt as if I might as well have been the first woman on campus to have a baby and that the "human" and "resources" were missing from our HR department.

Best of luck with the remaining weeks of your pregnancy!

A book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading was Mama, PhD: http://www.mamaphd.com/.

I did not get any paid time off other than what little I had for sick and vacation time. Thank goodness for STD insurance. I was on bedrest for six months and then took 12 weeks to stay home with my littlest one. All said I was out 9 months and I am so relieved that my library held my job for me. According to FMLA they did not have to hold me job past 12 weeks.

That said there is a huge benefit to employers to be family friendly. Yes they could have replaced me, but I feel an extra amount of loyalty to our organization now.
